CNBC has obtained footage of three Ford F-150 Lightning electric trucks catching fire and melting down in February of 2023. Ford has since halted production of the trucks and says it believes the problem is fixed. However, the fires highlight the growing risk of fires involving EV batteries, which can burn hotter and longer than traditional car fires and require new techniques to extinguish.
The footage, which was obtained through Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act, shows smoke billowing from the trucks as they sit in a holding lot at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan, factory. The trucks then burst into flames and melt down.
