EV RETREAT: Ford is retreating from some of its plans to bolster electric vehicle production. On December 15, 2025, the company announced  that it is taking a $19.5 billion charge connected to its EV investments and will end production on its all-electric F-150 Lightning Vehicle, which former President Joe Biden notably took for a spin during his term. Instead, Ford says that it will shift the F-150 Lightning to an “extended-range electric vehicle” structure, a form of hybrid. The automaker is also ending plans for an “electric commercial van for North America,” and will instead make a different van with gas and hybrid models “to meet the needs of commercial customers.”

Ford’s announcement comes just a few months after the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit expired, courtesy of the GOP megalaw passed this summer. DOT just weeks ago also announced new fuel standards that took aim at Biden administration rules meant to bolster EV production.
